2009-2010 Goals and Objectives
- Develop strategies for re-visioning collection development in the 21st century, including strategies for building collections in lean economic times, broadening the nature of what libraries collect and redefining the role of bibliographers in content lifecycle management.
- Work with the Joint Steering Committee for Shared Collections to help guide the California Digital Library on issues related to the development of shared digital collections, including vendor negotiations, business models, licensing terms, and future directions. Review strategies for budgeting, cost sharing, and co-investment in a time of constricting budgets for collections.
- Work with Shared Print Steering Task Force to develop and promote strategies and infrastructures for collaborative development and management of shared print collections. Identify issues and goals for building a UC Libraries collection. Continue to work with the CDL Director of Collections and the Shared Print Manager to set priorities, develop decision-making mechanisms and cost share models, and implement projects. Work with Next Gen Technical Services project to plan for the life cycle management of these collections.
- Work with CDL on issues and policies related to mass digitization of collections, digital curation, and eScholarship to identify synergies in UC collection development discussions.
- Consult with the UC Libraries Scholarly Communication Officers Group (SCO) on ways to synchronize investment strategies to help transform publishing models.
- Encourage the collaborative work of the bibliographer groups to build (select) and manage (assess and deselect) shared collections, including collaboratived shared print projects and projects utilizing the Web Archiving Service Engage bibliographer groups in discussions pertaining to recommendations from existing task forces and the CDC concept paper.
- Work with CDL as appropriate to streamline support for Tier 2 and Tier 3 licensing consistent with current capacity and UC Library Collection goals.
- Support shared collection building, both print and online, through new prospective and retrospective initiatives, guide associated infrastructure (e.g., develop guidelines for replacement of persistent deposits), and encourage use of tools such as the Web Archiving Service.
- Direct the Preservation Advisory Group on digital preservation issues and advise SOPAG on issues related to preservation planning.
- Support the Heads of Special Collections in their work on digitization projects.
- Work with the UC Archivists Council to provide direction and to develop recommendations on electronic records management issues and e-dissertations.
- Respond to all issues raised by SOPAG, other ACGs, and task forces, especially the Digital Library Services Task Force and the Next Generation Technical Service Steering Group, that need a collection development perspective.
